How to tell if what you have heard is really from Him

“Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge” (1 Corinthians 14:29).

For over twenty-five years, I have been a part of the fivefold ministry. My calling in part has been to equip those who are called into a prophetic ministry by teaching them how to hear His voice and know His ways. I am blessed to know so many who are now hearing God for themselves and for others who need a word. There are many prophetic ministers who are graduates from one of our video correspondence schools where we have taught men and woman of God how to hear God for themselves and follow the Holy Spirit and receive His gifts. These ministers are on PMT’s website, NeedaWordfromGod.com, administering the word of God. To date, over 409 ministers have been ordained under Prophetic Ministries Tabernacle’s School of Prophetic Knowledge!

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13).

I have also tried my best to teach those who have been called that it is not enough to hear God’s voice; you need to know what He means. Too many times I’ve heard others say God spoke to them, they were going to do what He said, and no one could stop them.

Later I found out they had messed up their lives, and their families were paying the price for their error. Being taught what to do when you think you have heard God is as important as knowing how to hear Him.

Learning to hear God is not a science. Learning to hear God is built on having a daily relationship with Jesus. In order to properly interpret what God is saying, it is not enough to merely hear His voice, although that is the first step to following Him. We must understand and know His ways. Learning to hear God and become familiar with how He does things comes through having an intimate relationship with Him. According to the scripture, Moses was one who not only knew how to hear God’s voice, but he also knew how to apply what God was saying into his life and the lives of the people to whom he was called to minister. “He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel” (Psalm 103:7).

So How Do I Know If I am Hearing from God?

“For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10c).

1.Is the word consistent with the Holy Scriptures? Whatever God has spoken to you should be confirmed through scripture. Example: If you feel as though God told you that a married man or woman is going to leave his or her spouse and marry you that word is probably not from God. “Thou shalt not covet” (Exodus 20:17).

2. Does the word line up with His will? What is God’s will for your life? Is what you are hearing from God consistent with what the Lord has told you previously? Example: God has called you to be a schoolteacher and now you think He is telling you to become a barber. Obviously, God can change your occupation in order to advance His purposes, but if you are hearing something this drastic, you probably would want to test it before you move forward because it is not consistent with what He has told you in the past. The way you test it is to ask the Holy Spirit to confirm that the word is from Him. He is always faithful to let you know without a shadow of doubt if the word you have heard in your spirit is from God. However, do not go tell you friends what you heard and then ask them to confirm it to be of God; you will only be cheating yourself. Wait on the confirmation; keep your tongue to roof of your month and do not tell anyone what you have heard until you have two or more solid confirmations from the Holy Spirit. If what you heard is from the devil or from the bad pizza you ate the night before there will be NO confirmation.

3. How can we know it’s His word? Wherever God guides He provides. Example: If you feel as though God is calling you to minister in Africa and you are currently flat broke, you should probably wait until there is provision before you move forward. There are times when God calls you to step out and do things that, in the natural, seem unrealistic. In those situations, God will always give you a word of faith (I Corinthians 12:9) that enables you to believe Him just by knowing in your “knower” even when it would appear to be impossible. In those situations, God will always provide provisions supernaturally. He may, however, have you act on the word of faith that He has given you in order for the provisions to be there for what He has called you to do.

I recall a time early in my ministry when the Holy Spirit told me to begin prophesying over radio out of Dallas, Texas. When I checked on the cost I could see that it was going to take a miracle to find the funds for this ministry expense. Now mind you, I did not call the radio station and sign a contract with no money or plan in hand. First, I started seeking God for confirmation that this was Him and asked Him to show me how I was to obtain the finances. After praying I dropped the idea (i.e. gave it back to God).

A couple of days had gone by and I was home getting ready for the day when the Holy Spirit dropped a word of faith into my thoughts. He was telling me to call a man I had done some construction work for and that he would give whatever I needed. Here is where true faith comes into play. You see, I was wrestling with the word because the man was a heathen and was living in adultery. I wondered why God would send me to this fellow. I thought for sure this had to be the devil, but I wanted to learn by knowing without a doubt. Well, then the Holy Spirit told me to go to my closet and put on my khaki pants and blue shirt and go see the man with the money for the radio ministry. To my surprise, I went to my closet and found my clothes all clean and pressed. So I put them on, like the Holy Spirit said, and started toward the phone to call the man. On the way to the phone thoughts started to come, telling me he would not be home being that he was a commercial airline pilot on international flights, but to my surprise he answered on the first ring. He invited me over to his home.

I sat down at his table, and as we had coffee I began telling him what I wanted to do. I wanted to go on the largest Dallas radio station and prophesy live to people who called in during the program. He responded with an abrupt question, “What do you mean prophesy to the people?” As I explained he asked, “Well how much money do you need?” Being unprepared, I was shocked that he even asked. Off the top of my head I blurted out $4,500.00. The man stood up and without saying a word he walked out of the room. I didn’t know if he was mad or just expected me to get out of his house. Then suddenly, a checkbook came sliding across the table. He sat down, wrote me a check for $4,500.00, and wished me luck. He did not loan me the funds he gave them just as the Holy Spirit said he would. Now, people, this is what we call being led by the Spirit, not telling a soul except the person the Holy Spirit sent me to with confirmation from the beginning to the very end.

Why Pastors Do Not Like Prophets and Prophetic Ministries

The relationship between Pastors and Prophets has sometimes been contentious. After the prophet or prophetic minister administers the word, there needs to be time for interpretation of the word and then proper application of the prophetic word. When a good prophetic word goes bad it is generally because the person who received the prophecy did not fully understand the prophetic word (interpretation) or did not know what do with the word once it was received (application). For instance, a prophet prophesies in your congregation to Elder Joe saying, “I hear the Lord saying He is going make a change in your career, and I hear the name Bozo.” Elder Joe’s interpretation of that word may mean, “I am to become a clown for the children’s church” (Interpretation). So Elder Joe takes a course at the local college to learn how to be a clown (application). Although I am giving a humorous example of prophetic administration, interpretation, and application, it takes more than just hearing a prophetic word to fully understand.

An improper interpretation and application of a prophetic word is the primary reason why Pastors have not always supported prophetic ministries. But we cannot throw away the baby with the bathwater. Prophecy is needed today more than ever. Prophetic Elders need to be set in the church to judge prophecy.

How Prophetic Words Should be Judged

Over the years I have visited with many Pastors who have expressed concern about people in their congregation saying they heard God. Obtaining, understanding, and being sure we know what He is saying requires confirmation. Every word we hear needs to be confirmed through two or more witnesses. It is not enough to trust your ears alone. The final point is that you need to know the exact timing of when God wants you to move or change whatever it is you are presently doing. Do not quit your job, move to another city, or anything else that could affect others until you have received solid prophetic counseling. Even if you have heard God, you need to know when you are to step out on His word. Timing is everything, and being out of His timing can be disastrous. When you have the assurance and you know what He means and confirmation of when to act, it can greatly increase your confidence. You will either be trusted by others as someone who can hear God or you will be viewed as a flake. It all depends on what you do after you think you have heard God. With the times the way they are and with this weak economy you cannot afford to make a mistake.

Throughout the years I have ministered to a lot of church congregations, and I have spent many hours working with pastors, helping them see the benefits of having a prophet come into a meeting and prophesy over the people. One benefit that many of my pastor friends still use today that helped them to better pastor the people is to have a prophecy party. After I had ministered to the congregation, the pastor’s secretary or helper in the church would transcribe to a text format all the prophecies that were audibly recorded.

Then the Pastor would call me back to participate in the prophecy party that the church would put together. As each person’s prophecy was played, questions would be asked and I would help them understand what the word meant, to better clarify what the Holy Spirit was revealing. The Pastor with the text version of the prophecy would make notes for his files that he would later use for each one of his parishioners regarding what their prophecy meant and what they could expect. This information became valuable for the pastor when counseling his people.

Many times, I have received phone calls from pastors who would tell me about a certain parishioner who came to them for counseling. They would excitedly begin telling me that the very word was coming to pass in that parishioner’s life. They would inform him on what was going on in their lives as he read their prophecy and the notes he took during the previous prophecy party. Stunningly, the pastor knew from the prophetic information he had kept for himself what was happening and could explain to them what God was doing in their lives. There is so much more to the prophetic gifts than just giving a prophetic word. Prophecy is changing lives for the better.

Burl Hamilton, who is mentioned in this weeks article received another prophecy and was hired as Benny Hinn’s chauffeur. This video of Burl receiving his prophecy was recorded just 6 months after the Jewish doctor received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in the Holy Spirit.

“Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass,When the Lord has not commanded it?”
(Lamentations 3:37)
New King James Version (NKJV)

Dear Kent,

Thank you for the e-Newsletter today! Kent, that was the nail on the head-the reason people feel wandering, lost, is because NO ONE has recognized their calling in the Body of Christ. That is 100% correct. And probable reasons for that-lack of knowledge, jealousy, and insecurity, the government of God with elders and prayer and fasting not positioned at large.

And so, it takes a prophet’s insight in an apostle with a father’s heart to understand from the Lord WHAT to do, and have the faith to act on it. Bless you. You have multiplied effectiveness in the Kingdom strategically to have heard this from the Lord and done it. But you have been like David to choose to take the road where you have to run from Saul, and in so doing, learned to trust the Lord even when He asks things of you outside traditional paradigms. So you have the trust level in Him to follow these unusual leadings.

Excellent job!
Crystal

What is Prophetic Counseling?

There is a difference between receiving Prophetic Counseling vs. Personal Prophecy.

When giving prophetic guidance and counseling it helps to know more about the person. The difference is when you receive a prophetic word from God He is telling you what He wants to say. When I am ministering in prophetic counseling He is giving me answers to what you need to know and what to do in order to receive the results you are looking for. When emailing or visiting over the phone most of the time God gives me the answers within seconds, if they are warranted questions. My understanding of this scripture below is different than what the Word of Faith movement taught me:

Matthew 18:20
“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Anytime I am with someone or chatting via email or other ways I am listening to what God has to say. The is a totally different understanding of this verse rather than what Word of Faith has been teaching over the years; “Whatever we agree upon it will come to pass” one major flaw is the one person left out of this formula, GOD!

The partnership level between being a Prophecy Partner and that of being a Family Partner are different and one does not automatically cover the requested offering for the other.

What do Prophetic Family Partner’s Receive?

I Want to be Your Prophetic Pastor

In the past, I spent much of my time traveling to other countries, but ministering in distant places left me drained. I have decided to hang up my traveling shoes and focus upon those families who regularly support this ministry. It is time for me to develop long term relationships with the people who have a real desire to learn more about what God is doing today.

Since 1989, I have ministered to over 120,000 people via prophecy as of May 1995. I receive hundreds of prophecy requests each year and I will continue to send out personal prophecy via Audio Email and on CD’s to those who are seeking God.

In addition to the prophetic gift God has given me, the Lord has also directed me to become a Prophetic Pastor to those who will receive me. In this new capacity, I can sew prophetic seeds into the lives of those who want to prosper with me. If you will allow me to be your Prophetic Pastor, I will commit to be there for you, and help you prosper in spiritual and financial health and wealth.

In recent years, it has become almost impossible to reach me; my home telephone rings day and night. For this reason, I have started the Family Partners Telephone Access Card. The Access card allows Family Partners to reach me during times of trouble or when having difficulty finding God’s will when making tough decisions. When you use the Access card, I will seek God’s direction for you and help determine how God wants to meet your immediate needs.

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”
3 John 2

Kent Simpson,

Receiving Your Personal Prophecy

Though a prophet may receive a monetary blessing when giving a person a word from God, he is not to be mistaken for a hireling. A prophet who is a hireling will give a false prophecy at the request of his financial provider for monetary gain.

In contrast to these false prophets, there are men of God who desire to only speak God’s words and to reveal God’s plans for the people. These men receive their spiritual blessing from God and their financial blessing from God’ people.

Old Testament Times

In the Old Testament we find that the Lord commanded Samuel, a prophet of God, to prophesy over a young man who would be coming his way around lunchtime. The Lord indicated that this young man’s name was Saul and he would be looking for his father’s lost donkeys.

As Saul and his servant wandered around looking for the lost donkeys, the servant spoke up and said, “Look now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.”
I Samuel 9:6

Today’s Spiritual Guidance

As it was in the Old Testament it is today; it is not evil to seek a prophet for spiritual guidance or direction from God.

Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, WHAT SHALL WE BRING THE MAN? For the bread in our vessels is all gone, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”
I Samuel 9:7
Then Saul’s servant said, “Look, I have here at hand one fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”
I Samuel 9:8

In this and other scriptures throughout the Bible, God has shown us that we must support his prophets. These men of old had conviction that they must bless the prophet, Samuel, for his intercession. God wants His people to be cheerful in giving.

“But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.”
II Corinthians 9:6,7
