Growing Up in Trials & Tribulations

Jesus said, “Can you trust me with this experience without ever knowing why?”

My first prophetic sign from God came to me when I was 9 years old. It was in June of 1961 my sister, Pamela, and I had been staying with my grandmother who lived in west Texas. We had been sent to stay for a couple of weeks with our Grandmother during the hot dry months of summer while our parents spent some time alone. After a couple of weeks, we knew just any day our parents would call and let us know that they were coming to take us home.

One evening, around seven or so, the telephone rang; our parents were coming to pick up my sister and me. They would have to make a 60-mile trip, which gave us plenty of time to gather our things, pack them up and get ready to go. While Grandmother was visiting with my dad over the phone, the skies opened up and a very fine misty rain began to fall. There was something very strange about the way it made me feel. I knew something was wrong. It was odd that I was feeling so bad about the rain. You see, the average rainfall for the western part of Texas is around 15 inches per year, so rain of any kind is wonderful, but not this night.

Suddenly, from out of the misty rain an angel of God whispered in my ear with such clarity it was if he were standing right next to me. I could tell by the tone of his voice that he was deeply saddened as he told me, “Your Mother and Father are going to be in an accident, and it will be fatal.” While Grandmother was still talking to my dad, I began begging her to let me talk to him. I was going to tell them not to come that night but wait until the next day.

She kept pushing me away; then, suddenly, she hung up the phone. I asked her, “Grandmother, why did you not let me talk to him?” She responded, “They will be here in about an hour.” With tears in my eyes I said, “No they won’t, they’re going to have a wreck.” Grandmother did not take me seriously. She probably thought I didn’t want to go home or that I was tired. But I knew that I knew in my knower that the wreck was going to leave me without my parents. With no question in my mind His Word to me was more real than anything that my natural senses could ever reveal, I began to pace around the house pleading with God not to let them die. At one point I stopped, placed my forearm upon the front door. Resting my head on my arm, I began to use my mind’s eye to envision my parents just running off the road unharmed. This was a vain attempt to try and use my seer’s gift to change the outcome. I knew that it was a long shot, but I was desperate to save my parents.

About 20 minutes later, my Dad’s four brothers came walking into the house. They looked very serious, and I knew what was to happen next. I tried to make eye contact with them, but they would not look at me. Then one of my uncles sat down at the counter where the telephone was; he picked up the phone and acted like he was calling the hospital in search of my parents. Acting as if he was talking to the receptionist, my uncle began to repeat each word he was supposedly hearing on the other end of the line, and then he said, “They were in a wreck between Odessa and Midland and Mozelle Simpson was killed?” My dad’s youngest brother was standing behind me with his hands on my shoulders. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I broke down crying as my precious little sister gently patted me saying, “It’s going to be okay.” She was only two years old and didn’t understand what had just happened.

I found out later that my mother’s oldest brother was also told by an Angel from God about the accident before it happened. My Uncle Johnny and his family were vacationing in Colorado and had a week to go before they were scheduled to return to their home in Dallas. My uncle indicated that a strong, undeniable impression came to him that my mother was in trouble and they needed to pack up their things and get back home. He also reported that as they were coming into Texas the state troopers had set up a roadblock and were stopping everyone coming in from the north. When my uncle stopped at the checkpoint they asked for his driver’s license then they informed him that his family needed him and it was urgent. The troopers closed down the checkpoint and escorted my uncle and his family straight through Texas, to where all the family had gathered to mourn the loss of my mother.

For years, I pondered on why my mother died and my dad lived. I wondered if my attempting to change the word by envisioning that they just ran off the road without injury spared him. I also questioned if God only allowed my dad to live but not my mother because I did not pray hard enough. The answer is found in the remaining portion of this story. See if you can find it and gain the knowledge from its answer.

The prophetic gifts have been present in my mother’s side of the family as far back as to my great grandmother. In the picture you can see her standing with my great-grandfather who was of Scottish decent. Even though the gifts were prevalent in all their lives, they did not knowingly use them or even know what was happening to them when the Holy Spirit came upon them. My grandmothers and mother were considered to be crazy when they would tell of things to come. They were totally misunderstood because they did not know how the gift worked, and no church at that time in their area taught on prophecy or prophetic gifts; therefore, the church would not have anything to do with them when they came seeking guidance.

I remember my mother would tell me that I would die when I was 27 years of age. It was only a couple of times that she would come to me with tears in her eyes and tell me what she knew in her heart to be true. My mother was not being cruel to me she was just overwhelmed by what she was experiencing. I’m sure what she was seeing was we would be separated by death and possibly saw the number 27. The irony of this story is when she died in the car accident she was only 27 years old. I tell you this because it’s important that you see how easy it is to misinterpret what the Holy Spirit is revealing to you. It was difficult for the disciples of Jesus to understand what He was saying to them face to face, with their natural ears, how much more challenging is it to know what He is saying to us Spirit to spirit?

You see, it is not enough to hear God; you must know what He means. This is the true test of everyone who ears to hear. All Christians have the ability to hear His voice, but not all have the wisdom and/or knowledge to properly interpret what He means. This is just another reason why it’s important to work with a prophet who has the spiritual insight to know and understand what our Lord is revealing to His people.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come” (John 16:13 NKJV).

Binding & Loosing on Heaven and Earth

Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
    (Matthew 18:18)

Over the years of being a Spirit filled Christian, I have heard various teaching on ‘binding and loosing’, but all lacked that certain anointing of the Spirit. For years I have been asking God to reveal to me the truth and how to activate these verses of Scripture.

To be totally honest with you, I had no idea whether I was supposed to loose the devil or bind the devil when praying. I listened to others as they prayed to see if I could learn something that I was missing; however, once again I was disappointed.

A few years back, around 2015, our Lord reminded me of something He had told me that I could do effectively. Then, and even after His recent reminder, I was still perplexed with His Word.

“If you will just say it I will do it for you.”

Now, this was the second time He had told me this, and I knew better than to take His word lightly; although, I did not know how to do this and see positive results. Oh, I had tried many times to claim things to happen with my own words or quoting the Bible effectively, but to no avail.

This very practice of naming and claiming a Bible verse was front and center of the Word of Faith movement I had grown up in during the 70’s. I tried hard, but it just did not work for me. In fact, I never witnessed the manifestation of what was spoken through the practice of ‘binding and loosing’ in accordance with one’s own authority.

However, when the Prophetic Movement began for me in the 80’s, I found my calling and it became very clear what I could do. Whatever I heard our Father say, that I could speak and it would come to pass. Just as our Lord Jesus said about Himself and the Holy Spirit.

For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.”
    (John 12:49)

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
    (John 16:13)

The practice of speaking what I have clearly heard from God worked and became the standard for my ministry and teachings.

    Simon Peter answered and said;
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in Heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock (foundation) I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on Earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on Earth will be loosed in Heaven.
    (Matthew 16:16-19)

When I learned of this truth about the foundation of the Church, I knew, that I knew, in my knower, I had discovered the true purpose of the Church. I was so excited about the foundation of the Church being based upon hearing the Father and that’s what the true Church was all about. To ‘pray, hear and obey’ was the very essence of what Jesus practiced for our instruction while He was on Earth. It did not take very long for the worldly part of Christianity to take control of the Church using methods suitable to their liking rather than God’s.

However, this revelation of the Church’s foundation did not seem to fit with what God had said to me for the second time.

“That if I just say it He will do it.”

I believe you can clearly see this is totally the opposite of what He has said regarding the voices of authority that should only come from our Father in Heaven. Obviously, what I heard was either not of God or I was missing something very important. After all, He did say that whatever we bind on Earth is bound in Heaven and whatever we loose on Earth is loosed in Heaven.

So, what is the missing link?

Pressing in, I started receiving bits and pieces. How out of one side of your mouth you can speak with His authority and out of the other side speak from your own authority. Part of the answer came as a number of followers were saying that I am an apostle, which I made ever attempt to correct them saying, “No, I’m a prophet.”

I knew prophets spoke whatever God said. Although, at that time, I had no idea how a true apostle operated. When I spoke those very words, the Holy Spirit began imparting His knowledge of my role in the apostolic ministry.

The powers of an apostle differ from those of a prophet. An apostle is given the power to speak those needs for the body of Christ and command changes without first hearing God. There are spiritual levels of trust that God gives to an apostle that differ from that of a prophet. When the vision of an apostle is proclaimed, the people who are called to this vision will carry the vision to its fulfillment.

So, here is what I have learned concerning binding and loosing on Earth and in Heaven: Wherever you find a true apostle claiming God’s promises right next to him will be a true prophet who first had revealed God’s plan.

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit
    (Ephesians 2:19-22)

Most of the things we discover from God are revealed to be very different from what we first envisioned them to be. This is true in this case as well, you see apostles are the first appointed leaders of the Church followed by prophets. However, before an apostle can rightly lead God’s people, he must first find the will of God from the one who is the revelator of God, the prophet. The prophet receives God’s will then shares it with the apostle. The apostle lays out the foundation to the people where God wants to take the Church.

Two instruments are required in order to effectively ‘bind and loose’ on Earth as it has been declared in Heaven. The first instrument to prepare is a Prophetic Proclamation. This document is the prophet’s interpretation of what God is revealing to His Church. This document is given to the apostleship to prepare an Apostolic Decree. After sharing with the body of Christ the Prophetic Proclamation the apostle will then declare with his mandate of the Apostolic Decree. With the declaration of this decree all agree upon (binding) or separate from (loosing) various functions and/or actions of the Church. Afterwards, the mandate is placed in the hands of the teachers to graft into the membership. Signs and wonders should manifest revealing the confirmation of these works to be the endorsement of God.

God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues
    (1 Corinthians 12:28)

Wouldn’t you like to see the Church move into the way God originally intended it to be? It can happen! Will you join us?

Impartation by Prophecy

Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.~ 1 Timothy 4:14 (NKJV)

In the spring of 1989, I was traveling with two seasoned Apostles and a pastor who was thinking about starting a traveling ministry. We were going from one church to another in the western part of Texas. Being that I was the newest of the group, I was allowed to hold an early morning Bible study, which was not always well-attended being it was early and no one knew anything about me. I was still trying to find out who I was myself and seeking God for answers about what kind of ministry He had for me.

We had been on the road for a few days when we met up with Dr. Bill Hammond’s group of ministers. Ironically, it was in the same town in West Texas where I was born. As we started the regularly scheduled services, I brought the early morning message then the traveling pastor delivered his. The hosting Pastor of the church decided that we would all meet up for lunch. I was honored to break bread with these men and hear them discuss our plans for the afternoon and evening services. It was decided that Prophet Gary Brooks would be holding the evening service and one of the Apostles would minister the word in the afternoon.

That night Prophet Brooks delivered a wonderful message on imparting spiritual gifts through prophecy and the laying on of hands according to 1 Timothy 4:14. I was moved by the Holy Spirit to ask Prophet Brooks if he would lay hands on me and prophesy and see what gift the Holy Spirit had for me. Prophet Brooks replied that he could not do this unless the Holy Spirit instructed him to do so. I told him I understood and we went our separate ways.

The next day we began the same schedule as the day before. When the evening service came around Prophet Brooks brought another strong, anointed message; however, right in the middle of his message he stopped and paused for a moment. Then he called me up to the front of the people and explained what he was about to do. He laid hands on me and began to prophesy, speaking of the gift of prophecy and other positions I would hold in the Kingdom of God. Well, I did not fall out under the power of the Holy Spirit; in fact, I felt absolutely nothing. When I returned back to the home where I was staying I began questioning God if this impartation thing was even real.

The next morning, I woke up and began my morning prayer; suddenly, I began to hear this voice telling me what to expect for the day and what I was to preach on. I abruptly interrupted and said, “I don’t know who you are, but I will test you according to 1 John 4:1 and 2 and see if you are of God. “I was a little shaken as I got ready and started toward the meeting where I was to join the other ministers to discuss the plans for the next service.

As the meeting progressed we decided we would hold a joint service in Midland, Texas, the homestead of President George W. Bush. It was well-attended, and Prophet Gary Brooks was ministering that night. When the teaching portion of the service was over, Prophet Brooks announced that anyone wanting to receive a Word from God should come forward. Well over 400 people gathered around the Alter, not counting the children. We knew this was going to be an all-night service.

Prophet Brooks began to prophesy over each person, so I retreated to the back of the sanctuary. As I leaned against the door frame of the main entry, a Man with his son of about 9 years in age stood next to me. The little boy who was standing in front of his Dad turned around and asked, “Daddy can I get a Word from God?” It was rather sad because the Dad knew that they would be waiting for hours before his son could receive his prophecy.

All of sudden the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “Are you going to allow Me to use you as a vessel that I may speak through?” I answered the Holy Spirit saying, “If you want to use me have the Father and little boy look at me.” No more than having that thought, they both turned and stared at me. So, I asked, “Does your boy want a Word from God?”

The man knew that I was traveling with the group so he took me up on the offer. We found a room that was not occupied and I began to pray. Suddenly, that voice I had heard during my morning prayer began speaking a long dissertation of God’s plans for the young boy. The youngster was my chance to put this voice to the test, so I began to say whatever I was hearing and experiencing. When I finished, the boy took off in search for a pen and paper to record the word.

Then the boy’s Dad walked over to a large set of double doors, and as he opened them you could see the alter and all of the people waiting for their chance to receive their prophecy. I was shocked when he began telling the overflow of people, “Come in here this man can give you a Word from God.” With my eyes bulging in fear, I watched a flood of people start toward me, quickly forming a line. I had no idea that this man was the Associate Pastor.

I shared whatever I heard from this newfound voice which was coming to me so fast I had no time to really think. Some people would cry, others would chuckle, and a few just seemed stunned. Of course, I had no idea if anything I was saying was correct nor did I understand what the word was meaning to each person. I began to stop after I ministered to each person and ask them what the word meant to them. As each one explained, my faith began to rise and I felt much more confident in what I was doing.

I realized that I could trust this voice, but I wanted to know why it was so different. Many times, I had heard the voice of God, but never had I heard him this way. Until that day, He had never spoken long, maybe a couple of sentences but no more. This voice was coming in like a machine gun. Later the Holy Spirit taught me the difference. What I learned was that when I received the gift of prophecy an angel had been appointed unto me to minister for me, telling me whatever God wanted me to know about each person I prophetically spoke over.

What’s Your Heart Saying to You?

Did you know the word ‘heart’ is mentioned in the Bible over 800 times? Have you ever stopped to think how this word is used when it is clearly not referring to the physical heart? Almost every time the word ‘heart’ is mentioned in the Holy Scriptures it is not referring to the muscle that beats in your chest pumping blood throughout your body.

The word is being used as a means of communicating to us something more spiritual than physical. Even today, thousands of years later, we speak of the heart often, but it’s not always in the context of the life-giving organ. For example, before a woman makes her mind up to stand at the altar and say her “I do’s”, she wants to know what’s in the man’s ‘heart’. She wants to know what is behind his exterior, what his true feelings are about her, his strengths, weaknesses, temperament, loyalty and the list goes on. It is safe to say the word ‘heart’ can be defined as more than a physical organ; it is something much deeper.

Some years ago, a close friend of mine, who is a minister, made a statement that set me on course to seek out the author’s meaning when using the word ‘heart’ while speaking of being born again. My friend was grumbling about what he heard people saying in regard to being born again; he didn’t like that they would claim they gave their heart to Jesus.

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your ‘heart’ (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your ‘heart’ that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the ‘heart’ one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation
    (Romans 10:8-10).

My quest to seek and find out from the Holy Spirit, the author of the Holy Scriptures, what is the word ‘heart’ mean when used in this context. Little did I know that the answer would open a window to my soul that continues to this day to reveal many other secrets that have been sealed within the Bible. The more you see how the Bible flows from Genesis to Revelation, the more you will begin to build a systematic theology that works.

There have been lots of spirited sermons preached or printed that move people to believe what was being said. I have discovered that if you test what is being proclaimed from the pulpit by actually living or doing what is said you will find truth or a half-truth or no truth at all. It is very easy to swallow a half-truth, but not so easy when it’s a bald face lie. Unfortunately, many high-powered messages just do not pan out when put to the test. Now, we know the Bible is true and God is no liar, so where is the problem? You are correct if you said that it is the person’s error by misinterpreting the Holy Scriptures.

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit
    (2 Peter 1:20-21)

So What is the Understanding of ‘Heart’ in the Bible?

When you see the word ‘heart’ in your Bible you need to fully understand what the author, the Holy Spirit, is revealing to you. The explanation the Holy Spirit gave me regarding the word ‘heart’ is this: when used in this context, it signifies the soul and spirit have come into agreement, unifying a spiritual force that has come from heaven to earth. Our soul is our mind, will and emotion that shapes our personality. The spirit is the life force that we draw from when we are in need of revelation or help that is hidden within us. When the word ‘heart’ is used in the verse mentioned above it is revealing that the man was given a new understanding that gave him a new spirit and also a new way of thinking. In this verse, Jesus is saying; “This person’s soul and spirit are united as one when his spirit is quickened by the Holy Spirit, and the renewing process begins.” This tells us more has changed than just the man’s personality or his words. However, renewing the mind (soul) takes time; therefore, each of us must continue to study, to show ourselves approved, so that we may continue to be more like Jesus, our Lord and Savior. It is our newborn spirit which we draw from that makes our mind (soul) students of the Holy Spirit, for He is our teacher and will reveal all that we need to know.

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him
    (1 John 2:27).

When we want to know the deeper things about a person, we must have the ability to see into their soul and spirit, (i.e. their ‘heart’). When counseling prophetically or giving a prophetic word from the Holy Spirit, we are in effect making contact with their heart (soul and spirit). This is how we know what they believe and what they have experienced or will experience in their life.

Many times, the late Prophet William M. Branham (1909-1965) would pray, commanding everyone’s spirit to submit unto him before he began ministering to the people. He would say, “I now take control over every spirit that is within the hearing of my voice.” When I first heard him say this I was shocked. However, later the Holy Spirit taught me what he meant when he spoke. His purpose for making this astonishing statement was to keep them in the spirit of faith.

The Soul

It is from the soul we gain recorded information that activates the word of knowledge, a gift from the Holy Spirit that reveals what has happened or is presently happening in the lives of those to whom we are prophetically speaking. One of the main purposes for this is to make them aware that God knows who they are and what is happening in their lives. This makes it much easier for people to believe when they receive a prophetic word of knowledge. Knowing what the minister said about their past was correct builds up their faith to believe the things spoken in prophecy (foretelling of things to come) regarding their future believing it will come to pass.

The Spirit

When you are ministering in the gift of prophecy, you will find yourself making a connection with that person’s spirit. It may help if you can envision this: Let’s say your spirit is talking with the person’s spirit to whom you are ministering, and you are receiving information about that person’s future. Once you have the revelatory information about the person you must begin to put into words what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you. Hopefully, in a spiritual way that will make some sense to person you are prophetically ministering too. This is where training in the prophetic really helps. We are not training ministers so much on how to hear the Holy Spirit but rather teaching them how to know His ways and His thoughts.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come
    (John 16:13).

Hearing without Knowing

When you are ministering in the prophetic gifts, you do not always know whether it is the word of knowledge you are receiving, something that has already happened in the person’s life, or if you are giving a word of prophecy, a message about what is to come. The person receiving the prophetic word can easily think that the minister is missing the mark when a word of prophecy is spoken, because it has not happened or does not fit what they are presently doing in life. It takes time to truly know if a prophecy is a true word from God. Some prophecies do not come to pass because the words are conditional, meaning the receiver of the prophecy was required to do something before the promise in the prophetic word will come to pass. However, a word of knowledge can be judged on the spot. There is evidence that is easily found just by asking the person to whom the word was given, if the things spoken have already happened in his or her life then you know it is a word of knowledge. Sometimes it takes more courage to speak a word of knowledge than a word of prophecy, for the proof of your accuracy is weighed instantly, whereas prophecy takes time to establish a solid track record.

Therefore, when you’re seeking the Holy Spirit for spiritual gifts ask for all the prophetic gifts, so that when you are called upon to deliver a prophetic word you can look into the whole heart of the person, soul and spirit.

The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart
    (Proverbs 20:27)
    .
